Podcast: Extraordinary Golf http://www.teeitupphilly.com/?p=2638 http://www.teeitupphilly.com/?p=2638#comments Thu, 11 Jul 2013 10:11:11 +0000 http://www.teeitupphilly.com/?p=2638 Wish I had a dollar for every time I’ve heard someone say: I was hittin’ it great during the lesson, but it never works when I get out on the golf course.

If that scenario — or something similar — is familiar to you, Fred Shoemaker says maybe it’s time to come at it from a different angle. Shoemaker is the founder of Extraordinary Golf, which starts with the premise that your perfect swing is already inside you, and it is the job of a coach to bring it out, not jam a bunch of new positions or swing thoughts in there to mold you into a golfer.

It is an approach that can be refreshingly simple, yet very deep in the way it explores the power of our minds and bodies.

Shoemaker has written a couple of books on the subject:   Extraordinary Golf: The Art of the Possible, and Extraordinary Putting: Transforming the Whole Game.    He was in the area recently to conduct seminars for some area golfers and PGA Professionals, and I had the chance to spend a few minutes exploring what his learning techniques are all about:

Here’s a bit more in this video:

And now the most important question:  Where around here can you get this kind of coaching?

Brandywine’s head PGA professional, George McNamara, has been practicing this method for several years. George and three others, Mike Caldwell (Brandywine) , Meg Donohue (White Manor), and John Poole (Chester Valley) have now teamed together to offer Extraordinary Golf coaching at their home clubs and at Blue Bell Country Club.

Their website is SwingWithFreedom.com, and you can find all their contact info there.

Podcast: He Caddied For Jones http://www.teeitupphilly.com/?p=2744 http://www.teeitupphilly.com/?p=2744#comments Wed, 05 Jun 2013 05:14:03 +0000 http://www.teeitupphilly.com/?p=2744

Every once in a while when I stumble on some old cassette tapes in the attic… I ask myself why I’m saving these things.

Well… this week is one of those reasons why. Today we continue to celebrate the history of Merion with a look back at the 1930 US Amateur… the championship when Bobby Jones wrapped up the Grand Slam.

And among those old cassettes in my attic.. is a 1989 interview I did with the local guy who had caddied for Jones that week in 1930. Howard Rexford was 78 at the time of our talk… and I enjoyed going back in time with him to a magical week at Merion. His memories are in this podcast:

Podcast: You CAN Conquer Your Nerves http://www.teeitupphilly.com/?p=2267 http://www.teeitupphilly.com/?p=2267#comments Fri, 07 Sep 2012 11:28:06 +0000 http://www.teeitupphilly.com/?p=2267 Relax.
Enjoy the game.
Positive self-talk.

Golfers are familiar with all those concepts, but when push comes to shove out on the golf course… they all tend to wither in the heat of the moment, when your swing gets shorter and your tempo disappears.

It doesn’t have to be that way, according to behavioral therapist Dr. Steven Rosenberg of Elkins Park. He has helped tens of thousands of smokers kick the habit, numerous pro athletes with their visualization skills, and says there’s a simple breathing exercise that can really help golfers deal with the jitters in those key moments.

That and more are in this podcast… a four-minute investment of your time that could pay off for years to come out on the course. Our conversation began with a simple question: What can golfers do improve their mental game… and play better?

Podcast: Optimize Your Routine & Swing Thoughts http://www.teeitupphilly.com/?p=2245 http://www.teeitupphilly.com/?p=2245#comments Fri, 17 Aug 2012 12:23:15 +0000 http://www.teeitupphilly.com/?p=2245 Why is it that learning how to keep it simple can be one of the most complicated issues in golf?

It is very difficult to know how to put swing mechanics aside and clear your mind so your body is free to put an athletic and powerful move on the golf ball. And the less you play, the tougher that can be.

Forsgate Director of Golf Carolyn McKenzie Andrews has been there. McKenzie Andrews had a big-time amateur career, played for Oklahoma State and spent some time on a mini-tour before settling in as a club professional. With a lot less time to devote to practice and play, she feels things like swing thoughts and pre-shot routines become even more critical.

Enjoy this podcast. The few minutes you invest listening could pay big dividends on the range… and more importantly, out on the golf course:
